Selena played with her older siblings at bars restaurants weddings fairs, and other venues. Selena, her sisters and their parents were extremely busy with the band. They never really had a childhood. But Abraham encouraged them to become dedicated musicians by his determination. Abraham senior played in Los Dinos, the band that started it all. Selena Y Los Dinos officially started in the year 1981. The band was part of the Quintanilla family's main business, and their primary source of income. Quintanillas were determined regardless of initially difficult financial times to make an established band. Selena Y Los Dinos became famous in states of the west in the late 80s. Selena was awarded the Female Vocalist award and the Performer's Year award at the Tejano Awards in 1986. Selena Y Los Dinos continued to receive awards of Tejano music awards, and they gained popularity and recognition. They appeared on many Spanish TV shows of the Spanish language like El Show De Johnny Canales Siempre En Domingo and Sabado Gigante.
